How do I get rid of an application's "Recent" document?

With both Microsoft Office and LibreOffice, when I try to open a document in its "recents" list, sometimes there is a document that no longer exists, or is a copy protected backup. For instance there are 3 versions of my checkbook register here, but only one is real. And I can't tell them apart except by opening them. How do I delete the wrong one?

I just hide the Recent Folder in Finder.

I don't see all of those duplicates in the recent folder in Finder.
