so I have and older macbookpro 15" on which I have recently upgraded its 120gb HD and 1gb ram to 300gb SSD and 4gb of ram, in order to upgrade software. I recently bough OS X Mountain Lion thinking it would work, but when I started the download it prompted that it was not compatible with my computer. Can any point me in the right direction or serve up some sort of solution if any is possible.

System Version: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)

Kernel Version: Darwin 10.8.0

Gmoney,

Before upgrading your Mac OS X to EI Capitan make sure that you have all the necessary hardware and software requirements. You can read this article for getting more information about the software.

I'm taking a punt here but if your MacBook Pro is the one at the link below then it's likely you cannot upgrade beyond Lion 10.7.x

Apple MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.16 15" Specs

*This system can run the last version of OS X 10.7 "Lion" if upgraded to at least 2 GB of RAM. However, although it has a 64-bit processor, it has a 32-bit EFI and is not capable of booting into 64-bit mode. It does not support "OpenCL" either. Please also note that OS X Lion is not capable of running Mac OS X apps originally written for the PowerPC processor as it does not support the "Rosetta" environment.
