Could some one please help me. We have a Mac OS X 10.7.5 I don't know any thing about computers. A black bar stays on my screen, 1cm wide, 10cm long, telling me where I am, and what to do. How do I quit this bar???

Sounds like one of the assistive features from System Preferences>Universal Access has been activated. Check in particular Mouse Keys and Sticky Keys are set to Off.
