I got my ex-husbands imac desktop from 2010 in the divorce. I had it in a box for 5 years but want to use it now. When I went to use it, I realized I don't know the password. I asked him but he suffered a stroke in 2013 and cannot remember it either. Took it to Apple but they said they cannot help. It turns on fine,I don't want to have to just throw it away.Any ideas/help? I will pay for someone to help me.

It look like you can reset the password by booting to the (hidden) Recovery HD partition (assuming the OS on the machine is not very "old"). Look at this link:

https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac/forgotten-mac-password-3594395/

and follow the steps under the part that says "Use Recovery Mode to change your password".

Let us know if that works. Many folks here are given suggestions for solutions to issues, but they never report back.
