Go Menu grays out top menu

First time member posting here. I'm trying to keep my early "09 iMac going. I'm running OS X Yosemite. I've had some problems (quirks and crashes), and I erased my hard drive and am now rebuilding it. All was going well until I plugged in my external mirror hard drive. Just as it did before I erased the hard drive, when I drag down the Go menu (and only the Go menu) the entire top menu grays out until I click somewhere off the Go menu. This seems to be the only problem. Perhaps a virus in the hard drive or just corrupted? Be easy on me please. I'm at the edge of my technical ability. Thanks.

The issue is resolved. It was just a matter of having a second monitor turned off with the applications folder hidden on the second monitor.
