Can anyone give any advice on how to recover a deleted file without having to pay for the recovery?

We need some information:

1. Exact Mac model you are using.
2. Exact Mac OS you are running.
3. Have you ever done any disk cleanup/maintenance/repairs, from a software perspective?
4. Are you making backups to an external device?
5. Is the deleted file on your internal drive?

I am not recommending either of those, as I have not used them.
