Flashing folder w/?

My imac now shows a flashing file folder with a "?" in the middle. What does that mean?

I have the same problem with an iMac G5. I'm thinking it may have something to do with the controller.

I'm looking for information as to how to access the info on the hard drive. I'm hoping that's OK.
