I've been having this problem for a long time now and I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to recover from it without needing a reboot. I am not the only one, if you search around, there are lots of video people that have had this happen. So let me describe the problem:
Suddenly, without warning, but I *think* it may only happen when you touch the mouse (so not fully spontaneously), the cursor will jump to the top left corner of the screen. It doesn't slide from where it was, to the top left corner, it instantaneously disappears from where it was and appears at the top left corner. I have hot corners configured so this enables Mission Control for me.
As soon as this happens, I know right away that video editing is broken. Specifically, what happens is that in both Final Cut Pro and iMovie, you can no longer "scrub" or "skim" through video clips. You can't move the cursor over a clip to scan through it. You have to click to get the shown frame to change.
This doesn't sound like that big of a hassle but it actually is gigantic. It makes it basically impossible to edit video. Quitting iMovie or FCP and reopening do not fix it. The only fix I'm aware of is to reboot. Which of course is it's own hassle because it's 2025 and people do a lot of different things on their computers these days, so I have to reopen all my notes and calendars and message etc etc. Its a pain to reboot.
Now this might not happen to me for weeks. Then it might happen twice in an hour. It is totally random. I am on the newest version of iMovie and the newest version of Ventura. This happened with the last few OS versions though, it is not new.
If there was some way I could "reset" the video editing API in the OS without rebooting the system, to restore the ability to edit video, that would be a huge benefit.
No one on reddit has any idea how to fix it. No one on the apple forum does either.
If you have any ideas, let me know!
