hi. My 2008 Macbook Pro has smcFan Control to keep temps down when using Yosemite
but when I start it in Windows the computer gets pretty hot.
Is there a recommended fan control program for windows? (free if possible)

Hello and welcome.

Sorry, but I don't have much experience with Windows, and don't know of any comparable applications like smcFanControl for Windows.

-Do you have to run smcFanControl on your MBP to keep temps down?. If so, then there is probably a hardware issue that should be addressed.
-What is causing the temps to climb when using Yosemite?

old 2008 computer and I'm in south america with no good Apple repair stores here so if it has a problem then I just have to live with it.

Understood.

Since it is an older model with an older version of OS X, the fans spinning up is actually a normal issue. A lot of that can have to do with streaming video, having multiple power-hungry applications running simultaneously, environmental conditions - heat/humidity, and dust and debris possibly clogging up the heatsink/fans/exhaust ports.

Hope you find a comparable app for the Windows side.

Be well,

C
