external thumb drive icon

I am trying to copy some files from my Apple hard drive to an external thumb drive. I am not an experienced Mac user. Help tells me to drag my files from desktop to the thumb drive icon, but I see no icon and do not know where to go to look for this drive. I cannot tell if the computer recognizes this drive.

Hello Greg and Welcome!

Try unplugging the thumb drive and plugging it back in. That has worked for me in the past. If that doesn't work, try rebooting your computer WITHOUT the thumb drive plugged in. Again, that has worked for me.

Also to add to searay345's excellent advice...can you also tell us what make and model it is ?

Have you gone to Finder preferences and checked "Show these items on Desktop"... "Hard Disks"

The thumb drive may need formating, Applications-->Utilities-->Disk Utility
