error checking volume

i must first say i am extremely sad with mac experience in general

2 years ago i bought an ibook to one son and a imac to another one.

recdently i bought a macbook as well but i continue to see very slow performance in general.

anyway lets start with the real problem...

on the ibook {2 yerars oldf}
i did a repair disk and get several errors
1. invalid key
lenght
2. volume check failed

1 volumme c ould not be repair because of error.

i tried from the desktop but also running the install disk as well.

how can i overcome that error to complete the repair disk......

also ......

another issue i just install mac office as this machine is for a HS STUDENT and word keeps crashing with

On the iBook you say you can't Repair Permissions/Verify or Repair Disc from Disc Utilities on your iBooks install CD/DVD?

If you are trying to repair things using the iBooks instal disc, are you holding down the "C" key upon hearing the startup chime at reboot?

What OS is on the iBook and are the install disc/s the original ones that came with it?

Ok boricua, I have been doing some research and have discovered that quite a few Mac users have encountered that "Invalid Key Length" error problem.

Your sons iBook will not boot properly until that error is repaired. The Hard Drive is most probably fine and shouldn't need replacing.

The common recommendation is to purchase "Disk Warrior" and to boot from the CD to fix the error, or to simply just reformat the drive.

While using either Disk Warrior (linky) to repair the HD, OR Target Disk Mode (linky)to back up your sons data, don't worry if it appears that nothing is happening or you just see a spinning beach ball for like ages and ages .... this is normal and it does take time to access all the directories, so be patient.

It is imperative that you also back up the data on the G4's HD as soon as you can. Whether it is via Network, DVD's or Target Disk Mode is up to you, but I can not stress enough the importance of backing up your data and believe me, I've been a victim to data loss before and it's very frustrating.

Hi all and welcome,

personally I don't know of any good open source Disk Utilities for OS X.

Disk Warrior is a very good investment and will 'save' you money/time over the years.

The only other option I can think of...back up the Mac and try and reformat the drive then reload the OS etc.

stsnley i did not mean to be rude !!!! just i think apple should have a better solution currently i will continue to use it like that it appears like the hd is going bad not idea what that specific error is and if it has any bearing on performance
