SOLVED Downloading new photos from iPhone to MacBook

Downloading photos to my MacBook pro problem: since last couple of updates , instead of being able to download only NEW photos, the "import new" is greyed out; the entire collection on my iPhone gets downloaded each time., consequently I now have many, many copies of all of the photos on my iPhone in my computer library. The "import new" is greyed out until all 7000-8000 are downloaded. HELP!

A few troubleshooting questions:

• Do you have a current Time Machine or other backup of your Mac?
• Which exact model MacBook?
• Which version of macOS?
• Which model iPhone?
• Which version of iOS?
• Are you using iCloud and iCloud Photo Library?
• Are you using iCloud Backup for the iPhone, or are you backing it up to your Mac?

1. MacBook Pro 15" retina- late 2013
2. Backing up with Time machine plus a separate hard drive
3. Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.2
4. iPhone X 14.7.1
5. Backing up iPhone on Mac
6 Using iCloud to back up Photo Library

I think I have just discovered the problem, of course, human error!! As Os updates the 'lists' in the Photos has changed, and I decided to check again, and ta da! New pics are there under 'Recents' I am mortified, but happy.

Oooops, about the multiple copies, I am working on deleting all duplicates, so I can keep track of if it continues to duplicate all in Library
