I bought a new MacBook that has El Capitan and realized I'm unable to run my version of protools on it. I have tried to downgrade back to mountain lion by following you tube vids and making a bootable usb but it just ends up showing a grey screen and cross.

Is it even possible to downgrade on the new MacBooks or even run mountain lion seperate? Thanks

Hello and welcome.

Is this a currently shipping Mac? If so, you cannot downgrade to an earlier version of OS X than what it shipped with. This has always been the case with Macs. It will not startup from an older OS, even on an external drive.

Which version of Pro Tools? Sounds like you will have to upgrade to a newer version. Pro Tools is notorious for requiring specific versions of Mac OS X for compatibility. They require them to be qualified before they are installed. I have a few friends that are recording engineers, and one is actually a beta tester for Avid. It is never recommended to upgrade your equipment or software before Avid qualifies it for use. In addition, never replace anything or upgrade a production machine...always have a secondary test setup to ensure that equipment/software upgrades will not affect any current sessions.
