Distorted sound on Mid 2009 MBP

Is it possible there is a software fault that is making my speakers distorted rather than both speakers breaking at the same time as this seems too much of a coincidence?

No, both the same and both started at the same time.

I mean't to add, It is worse on the bass notes

I should also say , the distortion is not there when using ear phones or external speakers which I guess does point to a physical problem with the speakers, but I can't believe both would break at the exact same time?
