disc repair problem

I am unable to get past disc verification. It keeps giving me a message to push and hold Control-r and wait for an apple symbol to pop up - except nothing happens when I do this. i have repeated the process and clicked on all the other options including repair permission and same thing happens. How can I get past this road block. Computer runs a little slow and just trying to clean up the disk.

If the drive has problems, ensure you are backed up!!! start from an external device and run check disc from there.

drive is OK, just a little slow. Just wanted to clean it up with the disc utility but it won't give me the repair icon after verification of disc, it instead pops up the message alluded to above.

this is not how you speed up your Mac. You find the Apps that are taking CPU time and Quit them

Hi,

You can use system monitor in your applications folder > utilitys folder.

Check you Console Logs for Applications posting error messages.

Leaving your Mac on over night lets it do a lot of housekeeping at 1:00am
