My brand new 13" Macbook Pro with 10.10 Yosemite routinely takes up to 90 seconds to start. Is this customary? That is a sharp contrast to the time it took to open an older Macbook with 10.6. Thanks.

First of all, please provide the exact Mac model that you have. If it is a brand new machine, 90 seconds is indeed a very long time, and especially if you have an SSD.

I see where that is not a new model of the MacBook Pro, but was manufactured in 2012. I also see where it comes with a slows, 5400 rpm 750 gig hard drive. I suspect the drive needs to be "repaired", primarily from a software perspective. Even with that, though, understand that the machine will still run somewhat "slow", due to the slow internal drive. You might want to consider purchasing and installing an SSD. I did exactly that with my late 2012 Mac Mini, replacing the slow 1 TB 5400 rpm drive with a much faster 256 gig Samsung SSD, and it flies!

In addition to honestone's questions:

-How much free space is left on the HD?
-Do you have any anti-virus or third-party utilities installed like Sophos or MacKeeper?
-Do you have a lot of applications launching at startup?
