Connecting MacBookPro to TV HDMI

Have my MacBookPro (purchased new June 2009) connected to my Sony Bravia LCD TV using Mini Display Port adapter to HDMI cable to TV HDMI port. Using cable from earphone port to audio input port on TV. The default MacBookPro purple starry background appears on the TV, but nothing else transfers to the TV. Was hoping to play a streamed internet NetFlix movie from the MacBookPro to the TV. What else must I do to get the screen image transferred to the TV?

A YouTube video advises going into Displays settings to 'Arrangements" tab. The Displays folder on my 2009 MacBookPro 13" has only Display/Color tabs. No 'Arrangements' tab.

My MacBookPro is running Mac OS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard.

Please advise.
