Hello,

-How many files are we talking about?
-Are there some JPGs on your Mac that you had before that you can't open?
-Do you have an external hard drive you can copy them to? If so, we can set the external drive to ignore permissions.
-You create a new folder which will give you read/write permissions for that folder, put all the JPGs in that folder, then Apply to enclosed items in the Get Info window of that folder to change them all at once.

-Are these pics on both the internal and external that you cannot view?
-Are they on the used Mac and not your primary?
-Which version of OS X?

Have we tried setting the external to ignore permissions totally?

-Close all Finder windows
-Get Info on the external drive
-At the bottom of the Get Info window, click the lock and enter your user password
-Check the box next to "Ignore ownership on this volume" and close the Get Info window

Then try opening one of the JPGs and see if the issue persists.
