Can't Install Downloads

I'm a new Mac user---when I downloaded new software (i.e. mailwasher for mac) I get an icon on the desktop and can't click on it or get any further.

at one brief point, I got a screen asking for an application and after I chose i work, The "open" was not highlighted.
