Canon Scanner Won't Work

Help! I'm pretty new to the Mac. I currently am running OSX 10.8.4, and am no longer able to use my Canon Scanner CanoScan 5200f. When I went into the SetUp, I was told "You can't open the application "SetUp" because PowerPC applications are no longer supported". Does this mean that I have to buy a new scanner? Are there any simple fixes that a neophyte could use? Failing that, is there a scanner that would work well with my MacBook Pro that would be good for documents, pictures and slides?

As I mentioned, I'm pretty new to the Mac, so please be kind. From reading the other threads, you are a great bunch, and very helpful.

With the Scanner Plugged in and turned on, check Image Capture to see if it is there in the sidebar.
