Cannot read older jpg files after upgrade to Monterey

Hi, I recently upgraded my macbook pro to OS Monterey. After the upgrade I cannot open older jpg files anymore, not with Preview and not with Gimp.
The jpg files were from an old iphone 4s, from 2012-2015 ...The error message is "could not communicate with auxiliary app", or something along those lines. Newer jpg open correctly. Is there anybody that can help?

  • Which version of OS X/macOS was the MBP running before the upgrade?
