Cannot Delete an Unusual Email

An email appeared on all our Apple devices, apparently from me sent at a time when I was asleep. The email supposedly contained an attachment with a 4 letter file suffix.
These emails were deleted easily from 2 iPhones and an iPad however I cannot delete from 2 MacBook Airs or my Mac. I get a message saying the email couldn't be moved to Trash because the file "17939.emix couldn't be opened because there is no such file".
I have shut down and restarted the three OSX devices, quit and restarted Mail with no positive results.
Any help would be appreciated.

I don't use Apple's Mail program, preferring to use Outlook instead. But, via a google search of "17939.emix could not be opened because there is no such file", there were a number of "hits":

According to that second link, an individual, with a similar message, solved the issue by rebuilding Mail's database:

Of course, you should first make a backup before proceeding (not sure if you just need to backup Mail's "database. I know how to do this with Outlook, although I've never encountered such an issue).

Tried the quick rebuild as suggested. Worked like a charm. In fact I spent more time, after the rebuild, looking for the now-deleted phantom email than it took to do the rebuild.
Very much appreciate your guidance Thanks again
