  • I have an IMAC , 10.6.8. Lately files, and folders break up when I move them sometimes . I usually reboot and everything is fine for a lillte while and then it happens again. Example, a photo will break into pieces. I have run many times the Disk Utility which takes about 1/2 hour and corrects many permissions but evenually the problem comes back again. The IMAC is about 5 years old. How to I correct this problem?

Hi,

I tend to agree with Kaveman re possible HD failure, but have two questions.

1) Rather than drag and drop a file does this issue still persist if you copy and past?
2) How much free space do you have left on this HD?

I have over 500 Gig left on the drive and also triple backups of the hard disk with
Timemachine to 3 external HDs. If I move or copy a scrambled/fractured /broken photo to another folder, it becomes normal again.

Hi,

If I move or copy a scrambled/fractured /broken photo to another folder, it becomes normal again.

This is most baffling and I also have never come across this issue before. It is almost like the original image file you are moving is corrupt in some way.
As a test take a screen shot, it should appear on the desktop now create a new desktop folder and drag it in that, what is the result broken or normal?

Also possibly try an SMC RESET

1) Shut down the computer.
2) Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
3) Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
4) Release the power button.
5) Attach the computers power cable.
6) Press the power button to turn on the computer.
