My Macbook was fitted with a new Main board and after the installation I could not open Pages or Numbers, wanted to upgrade to later to open. I upgraded to Big Sur.
After the upgrade I found that most of the Added mail boxes in Mail had gone and in contacts a large number had gone missing.

I have tried restoring mail from Time machine but it does not seem to want to restore and I can only see the remaining mailboxes not the missing ones.
Contacts I am not having any joy at all

I would also like to export the contact list from my I hone and hopefully import or sync, Macbook contacts from the Iphone

Thanks.

Hello,

-Were you using iCloud to sync contacts with your Mac and iPhone? If so, are the contacts there if you sign into icloud.com?
-Who are the email providers that were setup in the Mail app?
-Were your emails stored locally on your Mac before the logic board replacement? Or, can you see the emails and email folders if you login to your email provider via webmail?

And why would we have to check any of those things? Why does Apple keep doing this to its users? No advance notice of what to expect or how to prevent these problems! I hate these updates/upgrades! We just get used to something and Apple updates it and screws it all up! I would like to see these upgrades removed from automatic list of updates or at least give us the option to delete it and stay with what we have.

My MO with Mail has been to copy the Mail Folder from the Users Library and save it on [say] Desktop.
After starting up a replacement for an old OS use the above to Paste into a similar position on the newer OS.

Perhaps Cory can advise if this will be possible with New MacBook Pro M1?

The moral of the story is to defer upgrading until further down the line when all the wrinkles have been ironed out.

gelphyn,

That process shouldn't be affected by processor type. More recent versions of macOS don't allow for that, since they have totally changed how and where the Mail folder is organized and stored.

The best way is to export each mailbox in the Mail app, then import into the new Mac's Mail app: Import or export mailboxes in Mail on Mac.

Hope that helps.

Cory,

Thanks for the information.
I intend to review the situation when I have 'hands on' and review the situation then.

The setting up of Mail on a late 2020 MacBook Pro M1, running macOS Big Sur 11.1. has been the BEST Mail move experience ever.
Using Migration Assistant everything was transferred from Mac Pro 5.1 running High Sierra 1-.13.6.
All Mailboxes, with and without content, all present and correct.
Send from either device and it is promptly replicated in the other, Mail received works equally smoothly.
At last Apple seem to be back on the 'it just works' track, at least with Mail.
