Background alarm noise

I have a strange alarm noise on my new mac that doesn't go away even when the computer is shut down. It is a nee nah noise. Any advice please

-When the Mac is on, does changing the volume change the level of the noise?
-Does the sound go away if you unplug it from the wall?
-Do you have any external speakers connected to the Mac?

So sorry to be so long responding. You have helped me identify the noise by unplugging the computer. It is not the computer, it is my printer. Because the computer was the new bit of equipment I had assumed it was that. Thank you again.
