I'm fairly new here and I consider myself an Apple fanboy and expert, but I have never figured out how to use Back to my Mac (in the iCloud settings). Can anyone explain to me why I would ever need it and how it works? I'm able to share screens on my local network with no problem. But Back to my Mac is an iCloud feature. Does it allow me to control my mac without needing a remote desktop program like TeamViewer?

Tried a quick search here but didn't find anyone asking about this.

Yes, Back to My Mac allows you to see & control the Desktop of another Mac that is also logged into your iCloud account … so you at least need 2 Macs at different locations. Then you can drag files over from one to the other etc ….

Thanks for this, I'm going to try it as soon as i get a chance.
