Hello, if you want to delete the file, click on the file once, then click on the command and delete keys at the same time. Easier yet, merely drag and drop the file in the trash.

Thanks suggestion. Have tried both but it doesn't work. It works with other files but just not .avi files for some strange reason.

Open terminal and type

rm <Drag and Drop the .avi into the window and press enter>

You may need to log out and back in again after this.

Thanks but I need a bit more help. How do I access Terminal. I am afraid I may need a step-by-step instruction, if you have the time. Thanks in advance. I'm running OS X Lion on a MacBook Pro.

Terminal is in Applications > Utilities or on your Launch Pad.

Cant' make it much easier.

When you open Terminal a window will open you type in the 3 letters r and m and space, you then drag and drop the .avi file into the window and it will automajicly enter the path for you then press enter. That will ReMove the file.

Thanks your last and sorry I'm not into this part of the Mac world. Anyway, I followed your instructions and got to where I should drag the file into the window. The problem is that the file is not "dragable". The avi files I wish to remove are movies downloaded from the net of typical size 1.4 gb. While experimenting I found that some smaller avi files are not only "dragable" but on doubleclicking give the option of move to trash. There may be some sensible explanations to this - I just don't see them. If you do i'd appreciate to hear. To have the files on my hard disk is not the end of the world, I just discovered the problem when I was trying to clear my hard drive of unnecessary stuff to get more available space.

Try this:

  • Locate the avi and click it to highlight it.
  • Press Command C
  • Click on the Trash icon in your Dock to open it in Finder
  • When the Trash opens up in a Finder Window press Option Command V
If the avi file is moved into the Trash window (as is the plan), click the Empty Trash button in the upper right hand side of the Trash window..

Thanks. Have followed your suggested steps but unfortunately nothing happened. The strange thing is that some .avi files "cooperate" (ie can be deleted) and others don't.
