I downloaded some avi files and tried to play them in quicktime but it said there were components missing. I did some searching online for help and many people recommended Perian to fix the problem. I have downloaded Perian and now the avi files will play in quicktime but with no sound. When I play the file in VLC player it plays fine (but I want to burn the avi files in idvd so just playing them in VLC is no help). I also read online that AC3 codec may resolve the problem but Perian has this component and it still won't play the sound. Please help...

AVI is a blackbox of Windows media, its a wrapper format and not just a single file format. What this means is that decoding and encoding AVIs is a specialist dark art.

I'd try handbrake.
