Airport configuration problem

Hello all,

I'm not computer literate in any true sense of the word and hope someone can help with a problem I'm having.

I'm attempting to swap from a wired, Ethernet connection to a wireless, Airport connection.
Unfortunately when I open the Network screen to configure it, a flag drops down telling me that the settings have been altered by another application and the screen is frozen

Any ideas?

If my digital-related thickness manifests itself again I shall know who to contact.
