We have a couple of current Macs and a wi-fi capable HP Officejet Pro 8500. The wi-fi connection to the printer seems to not work for days and then come back for days even though it says it's on the wi-fi network the whole time. It says printer not connected when we try. Correct printer chosen in System Preferences and wi-fi works fine for internet and for iPhone and iPad.

Is Apple's Airport a better router for this setup than the one we got from AT&T?

Normally yes, faster and more robust.

Oh and some of those HP printers are real rubbish WiFi, we tend to plug them into USB on an Airport Express.
