Only recently my laptop fan has been running really loudly and it does get extremely hot. I've had issues with it over heating in the past but the fan has never been like this. I was just wondering if there was something I could do myself to change it before going straight to the apple shop

The hotter it get the louder the fans. its actually the GPU that gets hot, so if you are playing a 3D game or some other GPU intensive activity they will blast.
I can hear my 15" from 2 rooms away while playing Diablo 3.
If you're not doing anything I may be a process running out of control. Like Flash.
Check Activity Monitor.
